Why Talk about Pet Loss?

The Human/Animal bond is powerful and real.

Research tells us that over 62% of our households have companion animals and most of these owners consider these pets family members.  The benefits these family pets bring to our lives have been clinically documented throughout the literature (lower blood pressure and stress levels coupled with more opportunities for socialization etc.,) as has the genuine grief response left in their wakes when they depart us.  (How many of us can honestly say that our partners still greet us at the door literally shaking with joy upon our daily reunions?)  There is something to be said for the presence of unconditional positive regard in our lives and how its departure leaves us emotionally dislocated. 

Unfortunately, society often undervalues the loss of pets as somehow less than meaningful, which is a disservice to the acutely bereaved.  I recognize this oversight and am committed to providing competent, clinical support services by studying with the nationally leading authority on Pet Loss, Dr. Wallace Sife, whom certified me in 2011.  Dr. Sife is the founder of  the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement  (of which I am an active member) and author of the leading text "The Loss of a Pet:  A Guide to Coping with the Grieving Process when a Pet Dies."

In his book, Dr. Sife expounds on the unique aspects associated with pet loss (such as euthanasia) as well as the similarities to the loss of any significant human relationship such as the stages of Grief:  Shock, Anger, Denial, Guilt, Depression and Resolution.   Aftercare services (burial/cremation options) are also explored at length.
