Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding my practice.
Your first session will be structured as an initial assessment, which means that I will explore your reasons for seeking therapy and any current stressors. I will also identify your strengths and support system. Your history will also be discussed. Treatment goals will be addressed in a collaborative manner.
I am an eclectic therapist, which means that I utilize many different types of interventions with my clients based on their issues and the "best practices" in the field. I have specialized training in strenths-based, solutions focused, cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic therapies. However, each person is unique and my work is individualized to best meet their needs.
Treatment response varies. We will actively monitor treatment goals, progress and renegotiate goals as needed. Most problems improve after approximately six sessions. However, some issues take more time to see relief.
Only medical doctors can prescribe medications. However, if medication is clinically indicated in your case, meaning it will help your recovery, we can discuss referral options. (I share an office with a board certified psychiatrist.) I can also collaborate with any current physicians, as needed.
The state of Georgia Composite Board grants the L.C.S.W. license after an applicant meets certain strenuous criteria. The basic criteria are completion of a Master's degree in Social Work from an approved institution and completion of three years of post-graduate clinical supervision from approved supervisors. There are also two comprehensive examinations that the candidate must pass prior to being granted licensure. Following licensure, the clincian must maintain a minimum of 35 continuing education units (CEUs) on a bi-annual basis. These hours are comprised of professional seminars and trainings relevant to our work so we can stay current in the field. The state of Georgia acknowledges that Licensed Clinical Social Workers are an elite group of highly trained mental health practitioners, in that we are legally capable of assessing and facilitating involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, if needed, to ensure individual and public safety.
As stated, I am deeply committed to my work and voluntarily participate in monthly, peer consultation groups with other experienced therapists. During these meetings we discuss cases (confidentially of course) and other pertinent issues.
I am a fee-for-services provider. This means, I work on a cash basis, and you can decide whether to file for insurance or not. Many clients would rather not use their insurance, because of privacy or other personal concerns with therapy, and I respect this choice. I will, of course, provide the paperwork needed, if you choose to file with your insurance provider.
During our initial conversation, I will be glad to answer all questions to your satisfaction regarding fees, insurance and payment options. I currently accept cash, checks, money orders and all major credit cards. Payment is expected at the time of service.
